A Term of Outstanding Music-Making at Trinity
Term 3 has been a vibrant and memorable season for music at Trinity showcasing the remarkable depth of talent across our ensembles, classroom programs and senior music courses.
From jazz and contemporary music to classical performance and original composition, students have taken to the stage throughout the term in a series of concerts and showcases that highlighted both the breadth of opportunities available within the Music Department and the dedication of the boys who pursue them.
One of the term’s highlights was the Big Band Night of Jazz, which brought a full house together for an evening of jazz and improvised music. The concert also served as a fitting farewell to our Year 12 musicians.
The Big Band program provides a unique musical experience, with improvisation sitting at the heart of jazz performance. Developing the ability to listen, respond and create music in real time is one of the most valuable skills a young musician can acquire, strengthening musical understanding, creativity and confidence. The evening was further enhanced by a guest performance from acclaimed ten-piece ensemble Mosaic, whose appearance provided students and audience members alike with an inspiring glimpse of the possibilities that lie beyond school music-making.
The Experimental Drama Theatre was also transformed into a live music venue for the Contemporary Soloist Showcase. Supported by a house band comprising some of Trinity’s most accomplished senior contemporary musicians, younger performers were given the opportunity to step into the spotlight and showcase their talents. The evening reflected the strength of the contemporary music program and the culture of mentorship that exists between students across year groups.
Beyond the performance stage, Trinity’s senior music students have continued to distinguish themselves through their commitment to academic and practical music studies. This year’s Year 11 cohort is particularly noteworthy, with a record number of students choosing Music as part of their HSC and IB pathways. Their end-of-year recital provided an opportunity to share works being prepared for upcoming practical examinations and showcased an impressive range of instruments, genres and styles, spanning classical repertoire, jazz, contemporary works and vocal performance.
For Year 12 students, Term 3 marked the culmination of years of study and preparation. The annual Year 12 Soirée provided candidates with a final opportunity to present and refine their performance programs ahead of external examinations and submissions. Audiences were treated to an impressive variety of works, reflecting the diverse musical interests and strengths of the cohort.
The celebration of student achievement continued at the annual Composition Evening, where original works were performed and recorded. Showcasing music created by students from across the School. From chamber music and contemporary songs to multimedia projects and electronic music, the concert highlighted the breadth of musical imagination being developed in our classrooms.
Collectively, these performances and showcases reflect the vitality of music at Trinity. They are a reminder that music education extends beyond technical skill, fostering creativity, collaboration, discipline and self-expression. Whether performing on stage, composing original works, improvising with an ensemble or preparing for senior examinations, Trinity musicians continue to embrace opportunities to challenge themselves and grow as artists.
The Music Department extends its thanks to the many staff, accompanists, conductors, sound and lighting technicians, AV crew members and student leaders whose dedication behind the scenes makes these events possible. Their efforts ensure that Trinity’s musicians have every opportunity to perform, create and share their passion for music with the wider community.
As another busy term draws to a close, these concerts stand as a fitting celebration of the talent, commitment and excellence that continue to define music at Trinity.
