When Science met PDHPE: student collaboration fosters connection

Earlier this term, Year 11 IB Science and PDHPE students had the opportunity to participate in an engaging Group 4 Project, bringing together knowledge from Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Sports Science to investigate real-world challenges, and develop innovative, evidence-based solutions.

Working in interdisciplinary teams, students explored topics including sustainability, renewable energy, nutrition, concussion prevention, and emerging technologies.

The project challenged students to apply their subject-specific knowledge while collaborating with peers from different scientific disciplines to create practical solutions to complex problems.

Head of Faculty PDHPE, Mr Peter Low, highlighted the value of the experience:

“The Group 4 Project encourages students to move beyond subject silos and recognise how different scientific disciplines work together to solve real world problems. It develops scientific understanding while also building the communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills that are essential for future study and employment.”

Student reflections reinforced the impact of the experience. Many commented that they had previously viewed the sciences as separate subjects but left with a much deeper understanding of their interconnected nature.

“Working with the different branches of science made me realise that they were all interconnected instead of four different subjects,” one student noted.

“I learned that each branch of science has shared foundations and overlap. We need to implement all areas of science to solve complex problems,” another student reflected.

Beyond developing scientific knowledge, students strengthened their teamwork, leadership and communication skills while learning to value the expertise and perspectives of others.

The project placed students at the centre of the learning process, encouraging curiosity, creativity and critical thinking.

Mr Low says that the Group 4 Project was a highly successful learning experience.

“The experience showcased the ability of students to connect ideas across disciplines, deepen their understanding of science, and collaborate to address the challenges of an increasingly interconnected world.”
