Long jumper leaps into Aussie team

Trinity long jump sensation Mason M has been selected as the youngest member of the Australian team for the World U20 athletics championships in Lima, Peru, from August 27-31.

The 15-year-old was named in a 68-strong team of rising stars who will follow in the footsteps of their Olympic counterparts in Paris a few weeks earlier.

He showed he is undaunted competing against athletes years older than himself by winning three gold medals at the recent Australian Athletics Championships in Adelaide, including the U20 long jump.

He won that event with a leap of 7.73m, 16cm ahead of the field, making no fewer than four jumps exceeding the world U20 qualifying distance.

He doubled up by winning the U17 long jump with 7.32m, and for good measure added the U17 400m gold medal in a time of 49.37s.

Trinity Athletics Director Matt Wade was jubilant about the official announcement from Athletics Australia, calling Mason’s selection “the worst kept secret in Trinity track and field”.
