Weekend Sports Roundup – Triple gold for long jumper

Mason McGroder (10WH) not only won three gold medals at the Australian Athletics Championships – at the age of 15 he also attained a long jump qualifying distance at world U20 level.

He won the U20 long jump with a leap of 7.73m, doubled up by winning the U17 long jump with 7.32m, and for good measure added the U17 400m gold medal in a time of 49.37s.

Taking on athletes up to three years older, he won the competition by 16cm, making no fewer than four jumps exceeding the world U20 qualifying distance.

He was one of 14 Trinity students who competed in Adelaide and came home with 13 medals between them, six of them gold.

Hussein Choker (10He) won two gold medals – the U17 AWD 100m in a time of 12.77s, as well as the 200m in Australian record time of 26.04s.

Matt McLachlan (11WJ) set a championship record of 8:26.68s in winning the U17 3000m.

Back at home, he won the U16 cross country at the Waverley and St Aloysius’ Invitational meet at  Upjohn Park on a wet weekend in which Trinity won most of the two-thirds of fixtures not washed out.

Football teams enjoyed 17 wins and just one loss against Barker, with the first and seconds both winning 2-1 and all Year 7 and 8 teams coming out on top.

Tennis teams went down 4-11, volleyballers won seven of their 11 matches, and rugby teams won 5-3 against St Patrick’s. All AFL was washed out.

At state level fencing, James Davies  (11ST), Thomas Deller (11HO), and Henry Moffatt (11WH) won the U16 Epee gold medal.

James Davies  (11ST), Thomas Deller (11HO), Henry Moffatt (11WH), and Gerald Ong (11YO) won the U18 Epee bronze, an effort matched by Aaron Byeun  (12WE), Alexander Chu (12SC), Harry Zhu(12WE), and Oliver Kreis (12ST) in the U18 Sabre.
