Mathematics achievements stacking up for Year 11 Trinity student
When it comes to counting the successes of David L (11Fo) in the realm of mathematics, the numbers don’t lie.
“His exceptional achievements throughout 2026 have placed him among Australia’s most promising Mathematics Olympiad competitors,” says Mr Ed Habkouk, Head of Mathematics, calling David one of Trinity’s “most talented young mathematicians”.
Through a series of outstanding performances in some of the nation’s most demanding mathematical competitions and enrichment programs, David has progressed along the pathway towards potential selection for the Australian team at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), the world’s premier mathematics competition for secondary students.
This year alone, David has excelled in the following events:
- Australian Mathematical Olympiad Summer Contest and Workshops | February 2026
Gold Award with Perfect Score
- Australian Mathematical Olympiad Program Autumn School of Excellence (Senior Stream) | April 2026
- Australian IMO Training Tournament | May 2026
High Distinction
- UNSW Mathematics Competition | June 2026
High Distinction - Australian Mathematical Olympiad Winter Session | July 2026
Silver Award - Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) | August 2026
Prize Award - Australian Mathematical Olympian (AMO) Final Invitation Session | September 2026
Two papers, eight hours of examination featuring exceptionally difficult proof-based questions requiring demonstration of advanced mathematical insight, originality, and exceptional perseverance. Results still to come.
“These remarkable achievements represent far more than competition success,” says Mr Habkouk. “They reflect countless hours of dedication, intellectual curiosity, resilience, and a genuine passion for mathematics.
“With success across multiple national competitions and training programs, and having progressed to the AMO Final Invitation Session, David continues his journey towards a potential selection for the Australian team at the International Mathematical Olympiad, joining a pathway travelled by some of the country’s finest young mathematical minds.”
As he looks towards further opportunities, Trinity congratulates him on his success so far and encourages him as he progresses further along this pathway.
“We are immensely proud of David’s achievements this year. His passion for mathematics, humility in success, and willingness to embrace complex challenges exemplify the very best of academic excellence,” says Mr Habkouk.
