Tennis Round 2 vs Barker

Tennis Round 2 vs Barker

HMB Barker round 2

Round 2 of the CAS tennis competition was contested last weekend with a fixture against Barker College. Across the board, both schools were fairly even with Barker having a slightly higher winning percentage on the day. The winning Trinity teams included the 5th and 6th IV, 10D, 9BCD and the 8AB. The 8D team came agonisingly close to registering a win but had to be content with a draw after both sets and games were exactly even in their match.

Both the 1st and 2nd IV had a tough day on court with each team being comprehensively outplayed by a more consistent opponent. The 1st IV conceded victory without securing a set and lost all doubles sets 2-6. Our students fared much better in their singles with both James Kim (12 Ar) and Mitchell Reid-Queeney (11Ar) coming very close to obtaining the win. Both students had their opportunities with James having a set point at one stage, but both were to be denied as their quality opposition won the more important points. Finn Taylor (11La), playing in the number one spot, also played extremely well and dictated the majority of points over the course of his match. However, his big serving opponent was able to play a very clever defensive game, repelling Finn at every turn and recording the win on the day. Finn should be encouraged by his performance and look to be more aggressive once he has opened up the court by driving deep into the bigger spaces. Angelo Shi (11Sc) played well in his doubles hitting some very sweet volley winners from the net position.

The 2nd IV went down 2-6 with Chris Lowe (10Ho) playing his part in the two sets won. Chris combined brilliantly with his doubles partner, Nathan Tsang (10Du), winning their first set to the tune of six games to two. Chris then went on to record an excellent singles victory against a feisty opponent. Nathan also excelled in his singles having winning opportunities in his closely contested battle. Domenic Furfaro (11Ar) and Mark Charas (12Ho) played hard for the entirety of the contest against a strong and consistent opposition. Both students must be commended for their efforts on the day!

5th and 6th IV Report

Congratulations to all the tennis players of the 5th and 6th teams who came out fighting against Barker last Saturday. After last week’s loss against Cranbrook the boys were determined to acquit themselves well – and so they did. At the conclusion of play both Trinity teams had won four sets to two. Special mention must go this week to Keegan Van (10St) who played an impressive Doubles with Jack O’Shea (10He) and then went on to absolutely annihilate his Singles opponent six games to one. Marcus Lorenzato (11Fo) fought hard, pushing his opponent around the court, and was rewarded for his consistency with a 6-4 Singles win.

In the 6ths, congratulations to Oliver Dawson (11WJ) and Chinmay Gaikaiwari (11Fo) who paired up, playing some solid tactical Doubles and winning in convincing fashion 6-1. Both went on to steal wins in their Singles; Oliver in a tie-break and Chinmay seven games to five. Both players displayed grit and great sportsmanship to get the job done! An especial shout out to Bryan Yu (10Ta) who played his first competitive round and acquitted himself so very well.

Congratulations to all players on their sportsmanship and great attitude and good luck to all in their matches in Round 3.

10A and B Report

The As had a tough loss this weekend to Barker, going down five sets to one. There were some close encounters however, and the boys should be proud of their efforts. Max Tsai (10Fo) and Shan Mohan (10Ke) played a tight doubles match and won some brilliant points but ultimately went down 4-6. Josh Lee (10La) fought hard in his singles match, and nearly pulled off another come back of dreams this weekend. Despite some gritty tennis, he was outplayed in the end but should take solace in his effort. Special mention must go to George Stavrakis (10WH), who won the only match of the fixture for Trinity. George was comfortably in the lead at one point, but the Barker player admirably brought it back to 5-4. George was able to serve the match out with ice in his veins and did well to not let the change in momentum upset his gameplay too much. The boys will look to go again next weekend and get a few more wins on the board.

Unfortunately, it was a similar story for the Bs who also only managed one win this weekend. Alexander Liang (10Ar) and Owen Street (10La) had a close doubles match and will be kicking themselves that they didn’t win as they looked unplayable at times. Alex was able to turn it around in his singles match and played some solid, consistent tennis, to seal the match 6-4. Owen also played very well in his singles match and fought hard throughout the match, but unfortunately went down in a close affair 4-6. Michael Hatzistergos (10Mu) and Nikhil Akula (10La) played some incredible points in their doubles match, but a lack of consistency cost them in the end. A lot of work will have to go into volleying in doubles scenarios this week in training for all the players.

10C and D report

Despite an overall loss some fantastic games were played. All players were against strong winds affecting serving and ball direction. Ollie McComb (9He) secured a win of 6-2 against his opponent, playing hard until the very end with the set ending on a lengthy deuce to secure the Match Point. Elliot Russell (9Fo) demonstrated excellent ball positioning and quick decision making to take and leave shots to secure points. Ethan La (9La) had some excellent volleys in doubles and was a worthy opponent in this position. Fouad Deiri (9Fo) had great service games in both singles and doubles, showing both accuracy and strength in his hits. Unfortunately the hard work demonstrated by all team members was not enough to secure a win.

The Ds had a mixed game, with Edward Layson (9Ke) unfortunately being unable to play both doubles and singles due to two team members from Barker forfeiting. Edward made the most of it by playing some friendly games with the other Trinity players, working on improving his serves and rallies without the pressure of a competitive game. Thomas Deller (9Ho) had some great strong hits into prime spots of the court to keep his opponent continually on his toes throughout the set. Felix Reddel (9Ke) continues to demonstrate a great eye for the ball in doubles with a good strong backhand. Oliver St George (9Ta) had excellent serves against an opponent with a strong hit and secured multiple wins with his serving games. Trinity ended in a 3-3 set draw, but the individual winning games brought our total to 26-18 games, securing a win. Well done to each player for securing some winning games in their individual matches that ensured Trinity won overall.

9A and B Report

They say hot conditions are the best for tennis, but they seem to forgot that searing heat does not feel very nice on soft skin; at least from my perspective. Last week Trinity played a tough opponent in Barker College and each match, like always when versing Barker, went to the wire. Overall, the As were outplayed, losing 1-5 on sets, but each game was played to deuce and the game tally was close, 20-32. A couple of points here and there could have changed the outcome of the day but, notably, Noah Figg (9Fo) was spectacular in his 6-1 victory. Toby Zuzzo (9Ho) and Ashvin Nagaratnam (9Yo) were also unlucky to lose 6-7 in an all out classic doubles tiebreak.

The Bs were a different kettle of fish, though, winning their fixture 4-2 on sets and 30-26 on games. With both teams neck and neck it was imperative that we won our matches with comfortable score lines. Notably, Sasha Ratnavadivel (9Du) and Joshua Lubke (9Ta) both won their singles matches 6-3 which edged us to a famous victory. I wish all the boys the best of luck for next week.

9C and D Report

For the first time in months, it was time to whip out the sun visor; my 2003 Corolla with a faulty air conditioner did thank me for this. Last Saturday the Cs and Ds took on a mighty Barker side. However, Trinity managed to accomplish something that I rarely saw in my playing days against Barker – an easy victory. The Cs won their fixture 5-1 on sets and 34-15 on games, with singles wins from all: Bailin Ashcroft (9Fo), Alexander Hales (9Ar), Aston Tran (9WH) and Julian Grehan (9St). Each boy should be very happy with his efforts.

However, the Ds managed to top this feat with an even more impressive victory, winning their fixture 6-0 on sets and 36-6 on games. Again, each boy of: Geordie Brown (9Ta), Gavin Qian (9Du), Judah Krishnamoorthy (Ke) and Nikolai Baldwin (9He) all delivered for the school in their singles. The Cs and Ds are making a strong name for themselves amongst the CAS schools and I wish them the best for next week’s matches!

8A and B Report

The 8As played a dominating game of tennis over the weekend. Ryan Qin (8Yo) and Marcus Kuit (8Yo) showed a great display of skill against their opponents, easily winning 6-1 in their doubles matches, as well as their single matches. Similarly, Nathan Della Torre (8Yo) also overpowered his opponent,  winning 6-3. Lucas Preston (8WH) fought a much longer battle but ended up triumphant, after seven games. Overall, a great weekend for the As.

The 8Bs played a strong series of games on the Saturday. Ollie Jessop (8We) and Lucas Davies (8Ta) each played a dominant singles matches, with both players winning their respective matches 6-0. Likewise, Orlando Ang (8WJ) also managed to defeat his opponent without dropping a game. Overall a good weekend for the 8Bs.

8C and D Report

The 8Cs played a series of close games on the weekend. Trinity won both the doubles matches, with Sebastian Musumeci (8Ke) and Domenico Pangallo (8Ke) playing a spectacular game, hitting down the line winners consistently. Unfortunately, in their singles, Ben Loughnan (8Ke) and Jared Chan (8Mu), who despite both playing a strong game, were unable to win their matches. Overall, great games by the 8Cs.

The 8Ds unfortunately were not able claim victory against their opponents on the weekend. Alex Rabey (8He), who despite playing a great game, narrowly lost his singles match, 5-7. Tanner Hitay (8WH) and Liam Hudson (8Du) managed to gain the upper hand against their opponents in their doubles match, winning 6-4. Overall, a good weekend from the Ds.
