Gala Concert reunites Trinity musical family in “dazzling” performance

Trinity’s finest musicians and singers have returned to the stage in triumph with a sterling 2021 Gala Concert performance which reconnected the School’s musical clan after last year’s pandemic cancellation.

Head Master Tim Bowden described the concert at the City Recital Hall as one of the “mountain-top” experiences of the school year, adding: “The mountain is not conquered easily!”

“The quality of the musical performances was wonderful, and there was a special joy about being able to gather again, after a long break, as a community in the audience for a concert,” he said.

He congratulated Director of Co-curricular Music Dr Michael McGregor on his Gala Concert debut, and thanked all of the Trinity Music team, including those guiding Junior and Prep School students whose advancement programmes enable some to join the full Symphony Orchestra and Choir.

Junior School Head Mark Dunn described it as a “dazzling” event and a fitting climax to the School’s annual Arts Festival.

“I took particular joy in the performances of the Junior School boys who opened and closed the concert as part of the massed choirs,” he said.

He praised the efforts of four JS students – Timothy B (6J), Harry H (6J), Thomas H (6J) and Benjamin L (6H) – who played “significant roles” alongside the senior boys in the Academy Brass Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra.

“I pay tribute to all of the Music teachers, support staff and students whose talents, teamwork and hard work were showcased in extraordinary performances,” he said.

Head of the Preparatory School Chris Wyatt described the event as “simply brilliant”.

“There was a wide showcase of the musical groups that highlighted individual talents of the boys from all three campuses.

“Whilst I am sure I am biased, one of the particular highlights was the performance by the Combined Primary Choir consisting of boys from the Preparatory and Junior Schools.”

The boys performed For The Beauty Of The Earth by John Rutter, and joined a Trinity Combined Choir and the Academy Orchestra for a performance of Magnificat by J.S. Bach.

Director of Junior School Music Trevor Adams said the feedback from many parents had been “glowing”.

He also praised the rendition of John Rutter’s work, saying it “soared in grace”.

“Likewise, the Bach Magnificat and the Sibelius Finlandia under the baton of Dr McGregor.

“The Gala Concert was a musical feast and gave the younger choristers a fantastic insight into the wonderful musical opportunities awaiting them as they progress through the school.”

Previous Director of Music Philip Pratt received a warm welcome after travelling from Brisbane with his wife Ronnie for the concert.
