Mount Pleasant, IA – March 1, 2019 – The Iowa Wesleyan athletic department has named Jarryd Fernandes (SO/Sydney, Australia) as February’s Student-Athlete of the Month recipient.
“Jarryd is very deserving of this honor. He has been a model student-athlete since he arrived on campus. He has put in a lot of work to improve himself on the court, and that showed during the month of February. Jarryd had some extra motivation with parents visiting from Australia, getting to see him play in an IW jersey in person for the first time,” said head coach, Alex Huisman.
Fernandes had a solid final month for the Tigers. He averaged 21 points and 8.6 rebounds per game while shooting 71 percent from the floor. A highlight in February was Fernandes’ 51 point, 13 rebound performance against Greenville University. During the game, he made 21 field goals, which is now the single game record for most field goals made. Fernandes’ 51 points tied the single game scoring record, which was first set in 1960 by John Ward.
Huisman continued, “He delivered with a monster performance against Greenville, setting three personal career highs as well as two school records. Earning this award is just further proof of what Jarryd means to our program and the IW community.”
Jarryd is also a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee and has been actively engaged in community events and was a major contributor in Iowa Wesleyan receiving the 2018 Main Street Iowa Partner of the Year Award.
