Annual Giving 2020

Annual Giving Appeal

From the Head Master

In our earliest years, just over one hundred years ago, Trinity Grammar School endured a pandemic. For a school in its infancy, having been founded shortly before the Great War, the Spanish flu pandemic was an existential threat. The School closed for lessons, and the Head Master took the entire group of boarders and boarding staff to live in Austinmer, north of Wollongong. They established a little colony of two houses and two tents, and threw themselves into the joys of life on the coast in the Illawarra region.

While not threatening our ongoing existence, the COVID-19 situation also required a relocation for Trinity in 2020. Students departed the campus to take up their learning at home. Feedback from our boys and families has indicated that there were silver linings to be found in the clouds of the pandemic shutdown. The removal of the commute, the opportunity for shared meals, and the transparency of seeing one another at work and study, were all appreciated. However, there is no doubt that there has been jubilation at the return to School. The School buildings have been reanimated, echoing again with shouts and laughter. It has been tremendously heartening to see the boys reconnecting with their teachers and with their peers. I suspect that there is a new appreciation of their School among the boys.

The pandemic has brought significant financial challenges to many of the School families. The School has been quick to support those who have been affected, providing both a rebate on Term 2 fees to all students, and arranging deferral of Term 2 fees to all those who requested it. The School also chose to defer a number of major capital projects, acknowledging the uncertainty of the times.

Recognising that many of our community may not be in a position to contribute to our Annual Giving Appeal this year, I nonetheless commend it to you for your consideration. The generosity of the community with this Appeal enables us to undertake both minor and major projects to renew and develop our facilities.

We are continuing to plan for the future of the School, knowing that pandemics, and depressions, and wars, and any number of other challenges will come and go, but trusting that God will continue to work through the commitment of families, Old Boys and staff to ensure that Trinity will continue to offer boys a thoroughly Christian education in mind, body and spirit.

The Building Trust

Students are more engaged in their learning when teachers create a positive teacher-student relationship (Keddie, 2006). As our students continue to grow and our teachers push the innovative educational boundaries, we strive to provide the learning environments that foster a positive teacher-student relationship, as this is considered to be one of the most influential factors in educating students today. In addition, we must prepare our boys for the rapidly changing work environments that exist in our present society. Creating innovative learning environments is just one way that we can aid this preparation and also provide the best environments to cultivate the student-teacher relationship, while ensuring the student is always at the centre of our teaching and learning.

Supporting our Building Trust will assist in creating and enhancing innovative learning spaces.

Trinity Grammar School Scholarship Fund

Trinity has always striven to provide opportunities for students to benefit from a Trinity Education with support from one of our scholarships. In order for our School to grow the necessary funds to ensure these scholarships continue, we require the support from our community. Every contribution to this fund, whether large or small, helps our School maintain this commitment of providing life – changing opportunities for students so that they may grow in wisdom and stature and in favour with God and man.

Trinity Grammar School Library Fund

The libraries of Trinity Grammar School seek to provide an enriched student experience through the provision of innovative services that celebrate text, cultivate curiosity and inspire lifelong learning. We work collaboratively to support curriculum and to empower our school community to be ethical users and producers of ideas.

Our day-to-day services focus on providing students with an environment to engage in learning, reading, research, co-curricular and other collaborative activities. We work alongside teaching staff to co-design and co-teach units of work and/or lessons for which our collections, our learning spaces, and/or our specialist team are best suited.

Alongside our role in providing essential academic care, we are committed to driving reading culture amongst our school community. Our end goal is that students, staff, parents, grandparents, carers and others within our school community see themselves first and foremost as readers — readers who learn, readers who teach, readers who lead. We enjoy taking every opportunity to promote the benefits of reading for pleasure by way of an ever-growing physical and digital book collection, and in hosting engaging literature focused events such as books@breakfast, National Simultaneous Storytime, and Australian Reading Hour.

We are grateful for your ongoing support of Library Services at Trinity Grammar School.
