Weekly Sport Wrap Up – Strong finishes highlight final round of winter sport
It was a significant weekend in sport as our winter season drew to a close, with several teams finishing their campaigns in style and a number of outstanding individual performances worth celebrating.
Football enjoyed another strong round against Barker. The 2nd XI secured a 2-1 victory, while the 1st XI earned a hard-fought 1-1 draw. Several teams completed exceptional seasons, with the 7F side remaining undefeated after a 3-1 win and both the 2nd XI and 8F finishing the CAS season undefeated.
Year 9 and Year 10 teams also completed an undefeated round against Barker. Special mentions go to Jonah C, who scored the winning goal for the 7th XI in the final minute of the match, and to Jacob N (9B) and Martin G (7D), who each recorded hat-tricks.
In rugby, while the 1st and 2nd XVs were defeated by strong Waverley teams, there were some terrific performances elsewhere. The 3rd XV secured a thrilling 27-25 victory, the 15A team defeated top-of-the-table Barker to finish as joint unofficial CAS runners up, and the 13A team claimed an impressive win over Waverley to secure an unofficial premiership after avenging an earlier defeat.
Volleyball finished the season strongly against Barker. Both the 1st VI and 2nd VI recorded wins, with the 1st VI prevailing 3-0 and the 2nd VI winning 3-2. The 1st VI finished as CAS runners-up, while the 2nd VI were unofficial CAS runners-up.
In tennis, Barker proved a tough opponent for the senior teams, although several contests were closer than the scorelines suggested. The standout performance came from the 3rd IV, whose 4-2 victory capped an undefeated season. Jonathan N and Lucas P were dominant on the day, combining for a 6-0 win.
AFL teams also completed their seasons. The Year 7/8 side were impressive in an 86-47 victory over St Aloysius’, with Chase F and Hugh B each kicking four goals. The Year 9/10 team fell to a strong Waverley outfit in the Division 2 Grand Final, while the 1st XVIII were defeated by Knox.
At the CAS Cross Country Championships at Upjohn Park, Trinity were successful in reclaiming the Michael Spratt Cup as the overall point score champions. Congratulations to Cranbrook for winning the Neil Logan Shield. Individually, Alex M produced an outstanding run to finish first in the Junior division, while Pat M placed second in the Opens competition.
Round 3 of the CAS Debating competition saw Trinity face some classy debaters from Barker, however the 1st Grade, 10A, 10B and 7B teams all enjoyed victories in their debates.
This weekend also provided an opportunity to reflect on a successful winter season overall. Across 1140 fixtures, the School recorded a 50% win rate, with 568 wins, 483 losses and 64 draws. Highlighting the good run of weather we have enjoyed this season, that equates to 368 more games than were played in 2025 and 465 more games than were contested in 2024.
Finally, congratulations to Mason McGroder, who represented Australia at the Under 20 World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon, over the weekend. Competing against athletes several years older, Mason won a silver medal in the long jump with 7.96 metres, missing the gold medal by just one centimetre. An extraordinary achievement, recognised by a full-Quad applause in Mason’s absence..
