What Our Interns Are Learning Through Trinity’s Teacher Education Internship Program

When university students imagine their future careers as teachers, they often think about standing in front of a classroom. Yet teaching involves much more than delivering lessons.

For Trinity’s current Teacher Education Interns, some of the most valuable learning has come from experiencing the full life of a school—working alongside experienced educators, supporting students with diverse learning needs, participating in co-curricular activities and becoming part of a professional community.

Current intern Tyler says one of the highlights has been the variety of opportunities available through the program.

“I have had a good variety of experiences throughout my internship so far. This includes teaching across Years 7–12, attending excursions and minor involvement in co-curricular activities like sport.”

These experiences provide valuable insight into the many facets of school life while helping interns build confidence in different educational setting.

For Eloise, the internship has been an opportunity to grow as a teacher through practical experience and ongoing feedback.

“As a result of my internship, I have developed my confidence in the classroom and improved my communication skills and teaching practice to cater for different students’ learning styles in music. I have also been fortunate to gain some experience in casual teaching.”

A defining feature of the Trinity Teacher Education Internship Program is the emphasis placed on mentoring and professional support.

Eloise describes the relationship with her mentor teacher as an important part of her development.

“My mentor teacher and I have built a positive professional relationship with open, respectful and constructive communication. I am given feedback on my teaching after every class, andhave had the opportunity to sit in on other teachers’ classes to observe different teaching styles.”

Tyler reflects similarly on the value of learning alongside experienced teachers.

“I have built a strong professional relationship with my mentor teacher. Our communication has been essential to me becoming comfortable teaching at Trinity and staying on top of student progress.”

For Ashleigh, the internship has provided opportunities to work closely with students requiring additional support and to develop new professional skills.

“I’ve developed skills in working with students who have additional learning needs, particularly as I collaborate with the TESS staff and classroom teachers. I’ve also developed skills in communication and felt I have improved at taking initiative to be purposeful in how I aid and support the students I have been working with.”

Beyond the classroom, all three interns speak positively about becoming part of the Trinity community.

“Being able to observe in the classroom and quad has been helpful for me to gain a broad picture of the school culture, and I felt very welcomed by staff when I started at the beginning of the year,” says Ashleigh.

Eloise agrees.

“I have had a positive experience in my integration into Trinity’s school community. I have been impressed with the school’s strong sense of community and belonging, as well as the strong emphasis on holistic education.”

Tyler has also been impressed by the support he has received from colleagues.

“I have been impressed with the culture evident across all of the staff at the school as they have been kind and helpful towards me since I started.”

Together, these reflections highlight what makes the Trinity Teacher Education Internship Program distinctive: meaningful classroom experience, dedicated mentoring, professional growth and genuine inclusion in the life of the School.
