What does it take to become a teacher?

For many education students, the answer begins with university lectures, coursework and professional placements. While these experiences provide an essential foundation, Trinity Grammar School believes that great teachers are formed through a combination of knowledge, experience, reflection and professional support. It is this philosophy that underpins the Trinity Teacher Education Internship Program.

A distinctive feature of the program is its commitment to the intentional development of future educators through dedicated professional learning opportunities, including the Summer and Winter Intern Conferences. These conferences are designed to complement the practical experience interns gain throughout the year and support their growth as emerging professionals.

As Dean of Professional Pathways, Natalie Bluhdorn works across the continuum of teacher development, from pre-service teachers to experienced educators. The Internship Program represents a significant stage in that journey.

The Summer and Winter Intern Conferences create dedicated time for interns to step away from the day-to-day demands of study and school life and engage with the broader questions of teaching and learning. Through structured professional learning, participants are encouraged to reflect on their role as educators, explore what effective teaching looks like in practice and consider the kind of teacher they hope to become.

Alongside one-on-one mentoring, classroom observation and practical teaching experience, the conferences provide opportunities to explore topics such as teacher identity, wellbeing, professional growth and the realities of a career in education. The sessions are designed to equip interns with both the mindset and practical skills needed for a confident transition into the profession.

This emphasis on professional formation is what helps distinguish Trinity’s Internship Program. While teaching experience remains central, the program recognises that successful teachers require more than technical expertise. They need the capacity to build relationships, respond thoughtfully to challenges, contribute to their communities and continue learning throughout their careers.

The conferences also connect interns with a broader professional network within the School. By engaging with experienced educators and fellow interns, participants become part of a culture that values collaboration, reflection and continual improvement. Students interested in learning more about the Program are encouraged to attend the Teacher Education Internship Information Evening on 20 August 2026 from 5.00pm to 7.00pm. Applications for the 2027 Internship Program open on 21 August and close on 3 September 2026.
