Trinity ‘Bereans’ on mission

‘Berea’ is a Co-curricular program at Trinity for those in Years 10 to 12 who are interested in Christian leadership training. 

Named for the Bereans mentioned in Acts 17, described as being of more “noble character” and “receiving the message with great eagerness”, the program focuses on giving students opportunities to grow in their knowledge of the Bible, their own faith, and their Christian leadership.

A highlight of the calendar for the Bereans is ‘Berea Mission’, a practical component of the Co-curricular program spanning a week around Easter time.  

Dividing into four teams, the students head to Trinity’s Junior and Preparatory Schools to teach Christian Studies classes, run Chapel, and lead the Christian lunchtime groups. They also enjoy a three-evening residential training conference at Bishop Chambers House – this year, Rev Hayden Smith spoke to the students from the book of Proverbs. 

Mr James Harricks, Senior Chaplain says that across the week they “enjoy sharing meals together and encouraging each other to commend the gospel of Jesus wherever we have the opportunity.” 

For the students, it’s all about stepping outside of their comfort zone to see how they can adapt to new situations, putting their Christian training to the test. 

“The boys did an awesome job last week on Berea Mission,” says Mr Gabriel Lim (Secondary Teacher – Mathematics), who supported the boys on mission. “It was great watching them find their feet and thrive as they ran their own Christian Studies classes and their own Chapel service. The boys worked well as a team, sharing responsibilities and taking turns leading the classes, and I’m sure it was a valuable experience for each one of them.”
