Keep Calm and Play the Long Game | Continuing our series profiling Year 12 2025
There are a lot of versions of the ‘keep calm’ mantra … but the one I like the best is to keep calm and play the long game. For Trinity, the ‘long game’ is character: growing good men. This week’s profiled student, Adam Tennant, is a fine example of focusing on the long game – in Adam’s words, finding the ‘best version of myself.’
Balance and growth define Adam’s journey through secondary school. Balance allowed him to prioritise both academics and co-curricular, shifting that balance quite strategically at different points in the year, so that he could achieve ambitious goals in learning and basketball. ‘My greatest achievement at school was being part of the undefeated premiers in the CAS [Basketball] Seconds.’ Cadets and Community Service were also part of Adam’s co-curricular program. He made outstanding contribution in each of these areas, and, as Adam reflects, these experiences allowed him to understand what contributing to the wider world could also look like as he stepped beyond the Trinity gates.
This kind of commitment, however, did not mean that Adam compromised his learning and academic achievement. If you were to visualise his growth across the Senior School, you would see that Adam grew both his EPA and GPA steadily from Year 10 to Year 12. Stepping into the acceleration program in Year 10 via Business Studies demanded greater precision in academic engagement, particularly learning focus and task management, and he valued the opportunity to work and learn and grow in the more challenging landscape. While his Year 10 results may have predicted an ATAR in the mid 70’s, Adam in fact achieved an ATAR greater than 90, because he had the courage to see the long game and sustain his focus upon it.
