CAS titles for basketball, volleyball

The firsts and seconds basketball teams both wrapped up CAS premierships one week early and are on the brink of completing undefeated seasons jointly for the first time.

The firsts defeated Barker 102-43 and the seconds won 67-41, setting up season-ending finales against St Aloysius which could leave both teams unbeaten.

The volleyball firsts also made sure of a premiership, defeating Barker 3-0 to take an unbeatable six-point lead into the final round. The seconds also won 3-0.

Water polo could well provide another premiership, with the 16As heading into a decider against Shore after a weekend when the firsts defeated Newington 14-13 and the seconds finished on top of St Andrew’s.

All Year 10 and Year 8 tennis teams won, with the 8As still undefeated going into the last round.

The firsts went down 2-6 while the seconds won a tight contest by a single game, 35 to 34, after the matches were tied at 4-4.

The 7Cs cricketers had their first victory of the season with a resounding win over Barker. They posted 0/131 from their 20 overs, Navaneethan Rajeswara (7Mu) top scoring with 31 not out, then restricted Barker to 4/42.

Finn Byrne (10Mu) took a season best 4-15 to set up a win for the second eleven, while the firsts went down by eight wickets.

Year 8s won all 11 games in basketball and Adam Bachir (9St) had a huge game in the 9Es victory by dropping more than 20 points.

The 7Bs came back from 17 points down to tie their game with a minute to go on a huge three-pointer from Valentino Di Maria (7Du), only for Barker to make the winning free throw with seven seconds left.

Jett Dennis (7St) won an U12 track and field gold medal at the NSW Combined Event Championships in Griffith while Mason McGroder (11WH) placed third at the Perth Track Classic behind Trinity coach Liam Adcock, who jumped 8.33m to move to fifth on the Australian all-time list.

Rhys Olson-Keating (12Ta) placed first in the senior division of CIS triathlon and second overall in NSW and will now compete for NSW in the school triathlon nationals.
