The Learning Marathon: continuing our series profiling Year 12 2024

The academic year always starts with energy and pace at Trinity! Already we have enjoyed two Senior School information evenings for boys and their parents, the annual Scholars’ Assembly celebrating outstanding academic achievement across the 2024 Year 12 cohort, and Monday evening the School will host Enhanced Learning Services’ Dr Prue Salter to present on the development of self-directed study skills (Information and booking on Insite at this link).

The learning journey, however, is much more like a marathon than a sprint. My consistent message to students and parents is to stay calm and play the long game. But to play the long game you need to actively improve your skills, lesson by lesson, term by term, year by year.

The metaphor of the marathon aptly represents the School’s approach to continuous academic growth through consistent academic engagement. When students feel confident in their developing skills and plan their time strategically, they can set ambitious goals, they are increasingly motivated to achieve them, and they expand, often exponentially, not only their capacity to manage diverse responsibilities but their resilience to overcome setbacks. These themes are reflected in this week’s profiled student from the Class of ’24, Kevin Ma. Kevin likens the credential journey to a marathon and advises current students to ‘work steadily and purposefully towards the finish line’!

I encourage you to do three things: read Kevin’s profile here, register to attend the Study Skills seminar here, start a conversation with your son about his academic marathon and what he is doing to reach the finish line now!
