Seventh aths crown in a row
CAS champs cite strength in numbers
Long jumper Mason McGroder (10WH) smashed CAS records in three different age groups and shot putter Urijah Brown (7Ho) set a fourth but it was strength in depth that enabled Trinity’s track and field team to maintain its dominance of the CAS championships.
The theme for this year – “Mighty in numbers” – resonated as 148 students wearing the green and white colours collectively won 46 of the 97 events and finished outside the top four just five times.
That powerful team effort ensured Trinity won its seventh successive premiership, finishing on 698.5 points – 62.5 points clear of Knox and 66 ahead of Waverley.
“The squad had 148 heroes but no superheroes and we finished the night with a (personal best) percentage of 47 per cent,” said Director of Athletics Matt Wade.
“The strength of this squad was the depth. It was posed to the team that there was no reliance on any one squad member, and if everyone performed to the level they had all season we would come out victorious.”
Mason McGroder, fresh from winning a bronze medal at the world U20 titles in Lima, Peru, where he competed against jumpers four years his senior, demolished CAS long jump records in the 16 Years (7.50m), 17 Years (7.23m), and Open (7.44m) events, while Urijah Brown established a new record of 15.33m in the 13 Years shot put.
School records were also set by Nathan Jones (8Mu) in the 14 Years 800m and by the 14 Years 4x100m team of Koa Cooper (8Hi), Ethan Mullins (8Du), Aydin Bensan (8Sc), and Flynn Coady (8Ke).
