Silver and bronze at Oceania Games

Two Trinity athletes won medals at the highly rated Oceania Games in Queensland as the sport began returning to normality after two pandemic-hit years.

Year 12 thrower Jack Greaves won silver in the under 20 javelin with 60.64 metres despite a troubled preparation in which he suffered a bout of COVID and recovered from an elbow injury, while Year 11 shot putter Ben Stevens won bronze in the under 18 section with a throw of 17.20 metres.

The Trinity Athletics Club also fielded a team of 10 boys and seven girls in the event’s inaugural under 16 teams competition, finishing a creditable seventh.

The biennial Oceania Games in Mackay, delayed for a year by COVID, featured over 1,000 athletes, many competing for prized points that can help them qualify for Olympics and world championships.

“It was wonderful to do something we haven’t been able to do for two years – go away as a team,” said Liz Murphy, Trinity’s CAS Track and Field Manager.

“This group has missed out on so much.

“We had a number of PBs (personal bests) in the throws and jumps, and good relays, so it was a really good performance from a small club in the teams competition.”
