Recommended Reading Lists

Often, we get asked by parents what their son ‘should’ be reading at each stage of their schooling. Whilst our recommended reading list is a good place to start, we want to emphasise that what a student should be reading is a book they love! All of our staff are ready to have a conversation with the boys about their current interests to help them find a book that is suitable for them. We understand that sometimes parents find a starting point useful, so we would like to recommend the following websites.

CBCA

The Children’s Book Council of Australia looks at new literature being published in Australia each year and publishes a list of notable books. If you head to their website and select Book of the Year-Previous Winners, you can see all of their previous notable lists. This is a great list to look over with your son and decide which books he might be interested in.

K.O.A.L.A

The KOALA Awards are run slightly differently as they are selected and voted for by students in NSW. This is a great website to see what is currently popular with young children and can help students find new books they may not have heard of before.

Premier’s Reading Challenge

All of our students from Kindergarten to Year 6 are currently taking part in the PRC. What is great about the new website is that students can be provided with suggested books in the challenge to read. This can be filtered down to grade level and genre that the student is interested in. Just remember, whatever you read, make sure you log it in your challenge.
