90% of Trinity’s cohort achieve 40+ score compared to Australian average of 19%.

Sydney, Australia, January 2021

Sydney’s Trinity Grammar School continues to cement its world class ranking as an International Baccalaureate school, with five students attaining the perfect score in the 2020 International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma. The School’s detailed First Impressions booklet is available by clicking here.

The five Trinity students earned perfect scores of 45, equating to an ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) of 99.95. Trinity Head Master, Mr. Tim Bowden, said he was delighted with the results, reflecting that a year of COVID difficulties had not diminished the School’s performance in its long-established IB Diploma programme.

“There were 35 perfect scores in Australia – and Trinity students had five of them. Our 2020 cohort averaged an IB score of 37.2 which far outstrips the world average of 29.8 and exceeds that of the Australasian average (34.12) and the Australian average (34).

“95% of our candidates obtained scores in excess of the IB Diploma world average, showing our dominance in the international sphere and why our students are in such high demand overseas. Given the average Australian IB Diploma cohort is approximately 40 students, these averages are even more pleasing.”

About the perfect scores

Michael Lin produced an incredible 92/100 for HL Physics, an almost perfect 99/100 for SL Chinese and a 95/100 for Chemistry HL. His extended essay in English was deemed to be perfect with an overall score of 34/34.

Connor Debs’ highlights are found in a very different route with extremely high scores in Sports Exercise Health Science HL, German SL and English Literature.

Luke Selim earnt particular praise for his English Extended Essay and his Theory of Knowledge essay both earning him A’s across the core.

David Wang showed incredible improvement from the Trial examinations in both English and Chemistry to earn his perfect score.

Aidan Tharmarajah, who graduated from Trinity in 2019 with an IB Diploma score of 44, demonstrated remarkable persistence by resitting the Psychology examination in 2020, thereby achieving the much-coveted perfect score.

A further eight students were just one mark off the top ranking with 44 (an ATAR of 99.85), demonstrating once again the School’s reputation for academic excellence, enabling individual students to excel across a wide range of subjects.

“History has shown us that one or two of these might yet join their classmates at the very top as some only missed out on the highest band by 2-3 marks,” added Mr Bowden.

Across Australia only 15% of students achieve an IB Diploma score of 40+, whereas over 43% of Trinity’s cohort achieved this benchmark.

“While these are outstanding results, they should not be the only measure of success – far more valuable is to look at the men of character that our boys have become. We hope they can step out and face the world with confidence, resilience and resourcefulness, with the wisdom to know when to speak and the courage to stand for what is right.

“As our 2020 cohort move into post-secondary education and vocation, we wish them well. They have done themselves proud in continuing the tradition of excellence at Trinity,” said Mr Bowden.
