Common Ground: Contemporary
Ceramics
28 April - 22 May
2005
International artists Ah Xian and Liu
Xiao Xian are among ten ceramic artists exhibiting in Common
Ground : Contemporary Ceramics at Delmar Gallery in
May.
The exhibition is a snap shot of work by a diverse group of artists
making new work in clay. Ranging from installation and objects to
sculptural free forms, the common ground, which links the variety
of works, is the investigation into the connections between artist
and culture.
Curator Merran Esson said, "I am interested in showing work
that presents the diverse global view of current practice, work
that can surprise, delight and sometimes challenge our own outlook
on life".
Ah Xian won the inaugural National Sculpture Award
in 2001 and is exhibiting a new bust, not previously seen before
in Australia, alongside two other busts. Each one explores the mysteries
and meaning of the human figure and of our existence.
Liu Xiao Xian is exhibiting The Way
We Eat II, a four metre long installation of painted
porcelain. The work is a comparative study between extravagant Victorian
styled cutlery and Chinese chopsticks, a metaphor of the comparisons
and differences between Eastern and Western cultures.
