At Pine Bluff, the focus is on Education in the Outdoors with
a secondary focus being Outdoor Adventure Education. In Year
9, the boys are housed in a purpose-built lodge with all modern facilities
that provide a comfortable haven. They pursue their academic studies under
the direction of the resident Pine Bluff staff. The lessons are based
on topics taken from the environment or the history of the area. In Mathematics
the continuation of the Summer Hill programme is maintained whilst also
focusing on aspects of navigation. Science explores the areas of ecology
and environment and English is utilised to tie all of the areas together
through the medium of written expression.
The boys are responsible, under the direction of residential staff,
for all the day-to-day tasks required to maintain the campus. These include
kitchen wash-up, grounds maintenance, personal laundry, cleaning of buildings,
and garbage duties. The skills acquired in the opening weeks are put to
test in the final week when the boys divide themselves into four groups
and are assigned an area of the property on which they establish a standing
camp. Whilst here, they hone their skills in camping, bushwalking, canoeing
and teamwork.
Parents are encouraged to visit the Campus and spend the day with their
son on the nominated Sunday of his residency; a barbecue lunch is provided
for all on this occasion. During Term III several voluntary extension
programmes are offered. These include the Year 10 canoe/bushwalk expedition
and the Year 11 canoe/leadership skills extension. Our Preparatory School
Year 6 students also utilise the Pine Bluff facilities during this term.
