Curriculum

The Kindergarten to Year 6 Curriculum in New South Wales is defined in terms of 6 key learning areas:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Science and Technology
  • Human Society and its Environment
  • Creative and Practical Arts
  • Personal Development, Health and Physical Education

The School teaches this curriculum through the framework of the Primary Years Programme of the International Baccalaureate. The School is currently in the second phase of its journey towards full authorisation as a PYP School.

The International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP) is designed for students aged 3 to 12. It focuses on the total growth of the developing child, touching hearts as well as minds and encompassing social, physical, emotional and cultural needs in addition to academic development.

What is the curriculum framework?

The curriculum framework consists of five essential elements: concepts, knowledge, skills, attitudes, action. The knowledge component is developed through inquiries into six transdisciplinary themes of global significance, supported and balanced by six subject areas.

This is illustrated by the hexagon below.

The curriculum framework is further structured around three interrelated questions.

  • What do we want to learn? The written curriculum.
  • How best will we learn? The taught curriculum.
  • How will we know what we have learned? The assessed curriculum.

The School's languages other than English (LOTE) are Mandarin and Italian. Mandarin is commenced intensively in Year 2, continued at a maintenance level through to Year 6 and is available through the Middle and Senior Schools. Italian is taught in Kindergarten and Year 1.

The School's curriculum is developing constantly and reflects the changing needs of the boys.

Computers are provided in every classroom from Pre-School onwards. The library has a bank of CD-Rom computers which are used for research. A Computer Room and another room with wireless laptops are available for use by all classes and is the base for specialist computer lessons for all boys in Kindergarten to Year 6.

There are two support programmes, each staffed by specialist teachers. One looks to the needs of boys who require additional tutoring in basic areas such as reading, writing and spelling, to enable them to operate more efficiently at typical year level. The other provides extension and challenge opportunities across various areas of learning.

There are a number of extra-curricular activities offered before or after school. These include music tuition, art club, computer club, art of speech, chess, swimming squad coaching, endurance running and fitness, gamelan playing, chanter tuition, martial arts and tennis.
